One of my favorite books related to Systems Theory is Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software by Stephen Johnson (copyright 2001, published by Touchstone, New York). Starting with the behavior of slime molds the author uses a variety of examples to illustrate the power of emergence and the power of self-organization. I think the book has a lot of application to current social change efforts.

Beyondmarriage.org is the home of "Beyond Same-Sex Marriage: A New Strategic Vision for All Our Families and Relationships." This strategic vision, put together by a group of LGBT community activists, seeks to broaden the scope of the conversation about how we recognize relationships and reframe the debate around how we should address the basic needs of everyone in our society. I like the approach both as a way of systemically looking at the social safety net as well moving out of the debate around marriage as an institution. |
